When I look at a map, it can often bring back hundreds of memories for me. I am often asked where my favourite country in the World is. Having travelled to almost 50 countries, this is a difficult question to answer.
I often say that there are several different locations that are incredibly special to me. They are for a number of reasons:
1. I have spent a long time there and have a bucket load of memories (like my time in New Zealand)
2. Something significant has happened there (like getting engaged in Switzerland)
3. Events that happened in a particular place made it memorable, like riding a motorbike around rural Laos!
So there is no simple answer. There are many places in the World that I love, and will remain in my heart forever.
Preserving travel memories
What happens when you come home from a trip though, is there are way of preserving your travel memories?
For me I like to keep random things from my travels, including luggage tags with various airport codes, and postcards (I buy one from each place).
Since moving in with my husband, our home has become a bit of a travel shrine, with various globes and maps around the place. Even our wedding was heavily influenced by travel.
Recently I heard about a company called Alvar Carto who make custom map prints for your home, so I decided to have one made for my sister and her fiancé as a new home/engagement gift.
Making your map
Designing and ordering your map couldn’t be simplier. Just visit the Alvar Carto and click “create poster”
You’ll get a screen like the image below, where you can enter the location in the box, which will populate your map immediately.
You can choose a city or country, or be more specific such as a location within the city.
For my map, I choose the Brooklyn Bridge as this is where my soon to be brother in law asked my sister to marry him.
From here, there are 4 different styles to choose from. These designs vary in the text font, and features such as border.
Maps can also be customised with colour in the text on some of the styles.
So you can be sure that your map is one of a kind.
Cost + shipping
Although the company is based in Finland, you’re not going to be hit by extra charges for shipping. All maps come with free shipping as standard.
Maps cost range from €39-€69.
You’ll get your map sent to you by DHL priority mail, meaning you can schedule your delivery to a day and time that suits you.
My map was delivered to me within 5 days.
Once recieved, you can get on with syling your home. I loved the look of the map. Its perfectly printed detail and quality of the paper really stood out for me. It makes a great feature piece for any home.
I put the map in a frame and took some snaps to see how it would look in our home (I may now also have to get myself one for our home).
