The dreaded travel anxiety and how to beat it

Bravery is not the absence of fear, but the ability to take action anyway. A phrase which certainly applies to travelling all over the world. In fact, it is totally natural to have some anxiety or apprehension about visiting places that we have never been to before. However, the good news is that some strategies can help us to manage our worries. Something that can help to prevent them from getting in the way of sating our wanderlust. Failing to prepare is preparing to fail

Preparation can have a lot to do with how anxious we feel when we are travelling. This is because if there are things we are worrying about at home, they can draw away our attention from the present moment. 

With that in mind, one thing you can do to minimise the amount of apprehension is to make sure that everything at home is taken care of. Something that may include hiring a pet sitter, or taking our beloved animal companions to a friend or relative for the duration of our trip.

Teach yourself how to breathe 

Many of us make the mistake of thinking that we already know how to breathe correctly. After all, we haven’t fallen down in a faint yet! However, while we may be able to breathe adequately, is does not necessarily mean that we do so in the most optimum fashion for our wellbeing. In fact, many people have a nasty habit of holding their breath for short periods when they come under stress, and many more resort to short, shallow breaths. These being things that can further stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system and so make the fear response even worse. 

Happily, by learning to breathe correctly, that is deeply from the belly, we can calm our nervous systems. Something that can help to instantly reduce stress, and so provide a handy tool for keeping our anxiety in check. Whether we are in the supermarket queue or exploring the Wilds of Borneo. 

Do your research 

Next, remember that knowledge is often the antidote to fear. In fact, by researching the places that we are going before we arrive, we can be much more prepared as to what to expect. Thus reducing any anxiety and apprehension.

With that in mind, be sure to hop online and look into your latest destinations. In particular, be sure to check the current safety of the region, and the rating of the accommodation you wish to book. Oh, and looking into places to visit and eat, as well as some basic phrases, can make a huge, positive difference to your confidence when you arrive as well. 

Reduce anxiety naturally 

Another strategy that many people find useful when they are travelling is to use natural supplements to reduce their anxiety. In fact, there is an excellent range of these available on the market to choose from, including St John’s Wort and Valerian Root.
