Packing for vacation is where the fun starts! You’ve spent ages planning where you will go, the best time of year, and even the best places to eat or hang-out. So it makes sense that you want to get the packing perfect. It doesn’t matter if you are off to Ibiza for the weekend or a month in Mexico. The principles of excellent packing are the same.
Be More Santa
Make a list and check it twice. Of course, you know you need your passport, the applicable visas, money, and tickets. But what else should be top of the list?
Try to keep it capsule. Millions of people pack clothing they never wear! Try to avoid giving yourself too much choice, because it can cause such a headache when you have too many options. Here is a great starting point:
- Dresses & skirts – two tea dresses, one skirt
- Shoes – ankle boots and your most comfy trainer plus one pair of slim sandals
- Tops – linen blouse and a t-shirt or two
- Tote bag
- Crossbody bag
- Accessories – light scarf, sunglasses, and a sun hat
Try and choose a color scheme that works well together – tans and blues or monochrome.
- Tampons/sanitary products
- Dry shampoo
- Cooling mist
- Hair Bands
But don’t worry too much, you can easily pick up these items when you arrive.
Carry On Luggage
Typically you would put your electricals and other things you need to hand here. When you get to the airport, you will need to take everything out to be scanned, so try and make it all accessible. If you don’t need to take your tablet or laptop, then rethink packing it. Here is a rough list that works for your carry-on, depending on the size of the bag.
- Empty reusable water bottle
- Lip balm
- Hidden cash
- Charger block and cables
Using a ziplock bag to store your cables in will make it easier to keep them untangled and easy to grab.
If you wanted to pack 4 books, then they might be better off in your more significant case, or use a Kindle and load the books on there before you go.
You want to maximize the space you have. And since you won’t be overpacking, you have a little wiggle room for picking up some new goodies while you are away. In the meantime, here are two methods of packing that work really well.
Vacuum – Once you have folded everything up, you can pop them inside a vacuum bag and get it nice and thing. Scented dryer sheets in the vacuum bag will make your clothing smell great too.
Rolls – Rolling up each item will keep everything uncreased, and you can put hair ties around the items to keep them snug too.
If you use those methods, you will likely have space in your case. For the vacuum method, you’ll probably use all of that space on the way home. Weigh your case as you pack, so you don’t go over the limit.
Take your time when packing, but don’t worry too much, either. Anything you forget you likely won’t need or use, but any essentials can be purchased when you arrive.
